Breast Lifts and Mastopexy
A Breast Lift, also known as a mastopexy, is a surgical procedure to elevate and reshape sagging breast tissue. Over time, factors such as pregnancy, breastfeeding and the effects of gravity take their toll on a woman’s breasts. These factors can contribute to loss of skin elasticity, loss of firmness of tissue as well as enlargement of the areolae, all of which contribute to a drooping or sagging breast. A breast lift is designed to reshape, tighten and elevate the breast to create a more youthful, firmer, and shapely appearance. Sometimes a breast implant is used in conjunction with a mastopexy to add volume and restore additional fullness.
Every patient is unique in their anatomy and desired outcome. Dr. Christopoulos uses a variety of techniques to shape and restore the breasts and will guide you through the process of which technique is best for you, depending on the amount of excess skin as well as the amount of breast tissue present. Her goal is to give you firmer, uplifted and more youthful breasts that will restore your confidence and give you a more balanced and proportionate look.

Dr. Christopoulos, in conjunction with an anesthesiologist, will typically use general anesthesia to keep you comfortable and safe during your procedure.
Incisions
There are typically 3 common incision patterns:
1. Around the areola (concentric mastopexy)
2. Around the areola and vertically down from the areola to the breast crease (lollipop incision)
3. Around the areola, vertically down from the areola and horizontally along the breast crease (anchor type incision)
It is through these incisions that Dr. Christopoulos will reshape and reposition the underlying breast tissue, decrease the size of the areola, and insert a breast implant if needed.
Recovery and Results
The length of recovery depends on the type of procedure you have performed and the healing process does vary from individual to individual. It is natural to expect some bruising, swelling and numbness after your procedure. Most patients are able to resume daily activities within a few days and most can return to work within one week. Dr. Christopoulos will advise you to refrain from strenuous activity for several weeks after your surgery and will also guide you on the proper type of bra to wear. The Ultimate Guide To Breast Lift Surgery
Whether it’s due to age, genetics, or pregnancy or weight loss, many women find themselves considering a breast lift at some point in their lives. The decision to undergo any type of surgery is significant, but when it comes to one’s appearance, the choice becomes even more profound. To make the process more comfortable, here’s a comprehensive guide from Niki Christopoulos, MD FACS to understanding Chicago, IL breast lift surgery.
Understanding the Basics of a Breast Lift
Breast lift surgery, also known as a mastopexy, involves removing excess breast skin, reshaping and lifting the remaining breast tissue to create a more pleasing and uplifted breast shape and reduces the size of the areola complex. The result? Uplifted, prettier breasts that now fit your body shape. Sometimes, a breast implant is added to the breast lift if additional volume is wanted and/or needed.
Why Women Opt For A Breast Lift
There are numerous reasons why women choose this particular procedure. Here are some of the most common reasons.
Sagging Breasts
The natural aging process, gravity, genetics and breast feeding/pregnancies can all cause a woman’s breasts to lose elasticity and hence sag over time.
Changes After Pregnancy
After childbirth and breastfeeding, many women experience a change in their breast shape.
Weight Fluctuations
Rapid weight gain or loss can alter the breast’s shape and elasticity.
Setting Realistic Expectations
While the majority of patients are ecstatic with their results, it is important to understand that your ultimate result is based on many different factors. Each patient’s body, skin, tissues, ,and anatomy is different and will react differently to surgery. Factors such as genetics, age, lifestyle, and the quality of your own individual skin and breast tissues will ultimately affect the final outcome. Discussing your expectations with your surgeon when getting Chicago breast lift surgery is crucial to ensure that you are
you’re both on the same page.
Choosing The Right Surgeon
Your choice of surgeon will significantly influence your results. Ensure they are board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, have ample experience with breast lifts, and can provide before-and-after photos of their work. It’s also a good idea to read patient reviews and consider asking to speak with previous patients.
Preparation And Recovery
Your surgeon will provide specific pre-op instructions. Typically, this may involve:
- Avoiding certain medications or supplements
- Obtaining a mammogram (if over 40 or with a positive family history)
- Quitting smoking
- Arranging for someone to drive you home after the procedure
Recovery times can vary, but most women return to a desk job after 7 days. More strenuous jobs may require longer. Dr. Christopoulos will advise you on post-op care, which may include wearing a special bra, taking pain medications, and avoiding heavy lifting.
The Longevity Of Results
While a breast lift can turn back the clock on sagging, it doesn’t stop the natural aging process. Over time, gravity, age, and other factors can cause the breasts to sag again. However, by maintaining a stable weight and practicing good breast and skin care, you can prolong the results of your surgery.
Taking The Next Step
A breast lift can offer both aesthetic and emotional benefits, restoring not just a youthful contour but also boosting self-confidence. Remember, it’s not about striving for perfection but about feeling the best in your skin.
