Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, improves the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. Several factors such as aging, sun damage, smoking and genetics can all cause damage to the appearance of the eyes and the delicate surrounding tissues. This can create an angry, sad or tired expression even when that is not the case. Blepharoplasty is used to remove and/or reposition excess fat and redundant eyelid skin of both the upper and lower eyelids to improve the contour and restore the youthful tone and shape to the eyelids. Dr. Christopoulos uses the most advanced techniques to restore the vibrancy and well rested and relaxed look you desire.

Ideal candidates for blepharoplasty are patients who wish to correct:
  • Puffiness or bags around the eyes
  • Heavy eyelids
  • Wrinkled or drooping skin in the upper or lower eyelids

About the Procedure

Dr. Christopoulos performs her surgeries in a fully accredited outpatient surgical facility. The procedure can take anywhere from 1-2 hours, depending on whether both the upper and lower eyelids are being treated.

Anesthesia

Dr. Christopoulos, in conjunction with an anesthesiologist, will use either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia to keep you comfortable and safe during your procedure.

Incisions

The incisions are chosen to hide discreetly along natural skin creases. In the upper eyelid, these incisions are well camouflaged in an upper eyelid crease. In the lower eyelid, this incision is just below the lash line. Dr. Christopoulos also uses a transconjuctival incision, which is hidden inside the lower eyelid, to reposition fat and improve the overall contour.

Recovery and Results

The length of recovery depends on the type of procedure you have and the healing process can vary from individual to individual. It is natural to expect some bruising and swelling in the eyelid areas; this lasts anywhere form several days to several weeks. The sutures are removed within the first week and most patients are able to resume normal daily activities within a few days to a week. Results from your eyelid surgery will become visible as the bruising and swelling subside. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Christopoulos to discuss further any questions you may have.
